  • Sons of Abraham, Galatians 3:6-9 - We are justified before God, saved, by faith and not by works of the Law. That has always been so. Abraham is the prime example, the father of the Hebrew nation. His faith was fixed on God’s promise of blessing just as ours is now fixed on the fulfillment of that promise: Jesus Christ our Savior. “Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham,” Paul wrote in verse 7. His charge to the Galatians, and us, is issued in two steps.
    Dr. L. Daryle Worley - Senior PastorMay 17 2009
  • Sanctified by Faith, Galatians 3:1-5 - Paul turned his attention toward the Galatians as chapter 3 opens, asking them several direct questions regarding the nature of their salvation and how it was accomplished. How was it possible that they had allowed themselves to be misled so badly? Let’s work through these five question and then see what they mean for us.
    Dr. L. Daryle Worley - Senior PastorMay 10 2009
  • Justified by Faith, Galatians 2:15-21 - It is difficult to tell where Paul ends the direct quote of what he said to Peter (vs.14). But it seems pretty clear that the “We” at the beginning of vs.15 is still referring to Peter and him, even if Paul isn’t continuing his quote into today’s passage. What we see, though, is one of the richest, most dense affirmations of the central truth of Christianity that appears in all the Scriptures.

  • Remember, Marvel, Believe, Luke 23:50-24:12 - The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the centerpiece of Christian doctrine, but it is still such an amazing occurrence that we need to be reminded often that it really did happen! And we’re not alone. Even his disciples and others closest to him didn’t anticipate it, and then struggled to grasp what it all meant.

  • Majestic Grace, Isaiah 6:1-13 - What does it look like when a sinner encounters the majestic, holy God and receives his grace? Isaiah encounters God and exhibits a gospel response which should serve as a model for every believer: unqualified worship and service of the true and living God.
    Dr. L Daryle Worley - Senior PastorFebruary 15 2009
  • Contagious Grace, Acts 17:16-34 - It is a daunting task to be charged with carrying the pure gospel out into a world of people who know little to nothing about God or His ways or His Word. Whom do you address? Where do you start? What do you say? How far do you go? Luke records an experience from Paul’s life that is amazingly instructive for our day and age.

  • Obligatory Grace, Selected Texts - There could be no better beginning to our 25th anniversary year than to make sure we understand the gospel clearly. Due to the careless or selfserving purposes of men obscuring God’s message of salvation, it has stood in need of clarification on a number of prominent occasions throughout church history. I want to draw our attention to the Synod of Dort in the early 17th century, seeing the fruit of that gathering as particularly helpful for addressing challenges to the gospel in our day. First, let’s paint a bit of the historical picture. Then let’s look into the first of five specific points of clarification.

  • Blessed!, Luke 1:39-45 - After delivering astounding news to Mary regarding her assignment from God, the angel Gabriel also let her know that her relative, Elizabeth—the wife of Zechariah the priest who had never born children and was now old—was six months along with their first son. After she received her own news with humility and submission, Mary knew what must be done next: she took off on a joyful journey that would result in a remarkable reception.

  • Cover a Multitude of Sins, James 5:19-20 - In his parting charge, James urges his readers toward contagious obedience: not only should they strive to be doers of the Word themselves, they should also seek to help one another to live by the truth—with full confidence that God will meet them in their efforts and cause them to bear lasting fruit.

  • The Prayer of a Righteous Person, James 5:13-18 - At the end of his letter to the Ephesians, Paul wrote, “(Pray) at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints” (6:18). James is saying a very similar thing, but he’s also spelling out more specifically when and how and why to pray.
    Dr. L. Daryle Worley - Senior PastorNovember 23 2008
  • Yes, Yes and No, No, James 5:12 - With the words “above all,” James introduces the conclusion to his letter. Then, in verses 12-20 he addresses three matters that are of great consequence to the message he has been preaching to his people. Our passage today offers one final installment regarding control of the tongue, putting it in the broadest possible context.
    Dr. L. Daryle Worley - Senior PastorNovember 16 2008
  • Be Patient and Steadfast, James 5:7-11 - Having address the insensitivities of the unconverted wealthy and warned them of coming judgment, James turns his attention to those brothers and sisters who have been the recipients of their cruelty, urging patience and steadfastness in light of the Lord’s return.
    Dr. L. Daryle Worley - Senior PastorNovember 9 2008
  • Fattened for the Day of Slaughter, James 5:1-6 - James turned his sights on the insensitivities of the unconverted wealthy with at least equal fervor that he did with those who were brothers, alerting them to God’s judgment: “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you” (vs.1). Let’s look at three reasons for this brutal warning.

  • If the Lord Wills..., James 4:13-17 - Our words reveal our hearts on what we truly believe is important. James takes on the crowd who marginalizes God in their daily pursuits and reminds them what they need to know, what they need to remember, and how they ought to be living.

  • Who Are You to Judge?, James 4:11-12 - Genuine love of neighbor (with no favoritism), good works, and controlled speech characterized by God-granted wisdom and grace-drenched humility are all drawn together in one practical charge regarding how not to speak about people, fellow believers. In these two short verses we receive a startlingly serious warning about a rather common practice among Christians. We need to have our questions answered to understand and remedy this problem.

  • Humble Yourself Before the Lord, James 4:1-4 - The first paragraph of James 4 is like a visit to the doctor. He can see the symptoms as we walk in the door so he asks diagnostic questions. Then he traces out some of the most serious implications. And finally he writes a prescription to bring about healing. That is the simple, three-part outline that will usher us through this passage.

  • Earthly vs. Heavenly Wisdom, James 3:13-18 - Having promised that God will grant wisdom to any who ask for it, James now asks a penetrating question regarding who truly has wisdom. Then he offered descriptions to help us recognize two different types of wisdom, and the fruit they produce.

  • Taming the Tongue, Part 2, James 3:5b-12 - In 3:1-12 James takes up the subject of the tongue: for it small size it is more powerful than we would expect (vss.1-5a), wielding great influence, and it is more rebellious that we would imagine (vss.5b-12), capable of great destruction. Let’s unpack James’ instruction in this latter paragraph.

  • Faith Works, Pt. 2, James 2:18-26 - Having moved through a sort of summary introduction to the most controversial paragraph in his letter, James now moves into the pushes and pulls of this tough topic. Let's unpack his assertion that good works are a necessary manifestation of genuine faith by dividing it into five stages.

  • A Vision of Grace, Selected Texts - Let’s walk through the three categories mentioned in our Statement of Purpose, the explicit reason why we exist as Grace Church of DuPage, and remind us all of some promises that come along with that statement—to ensure that we keep them, and to urge each and every one who calls Grace, home, to help us do so.

  • So Speak and So Ask, James 2:8-13 - As James concludes this paragraph in 2:1-13, he is amplifying what true religion looks like (1:27). He’s helping his people see how and why they need to be doers of the Word and not hearers only (1:22). He’s urging them yet again to receive with meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save their souls (1:21). Here in 2:8-13 he walks them through four steps that will hopefully keep them, and us, on the path toward spiritual wholeness before God.

  • Hold the Faith, James 2:1-7 - James’ clear and singular charge comes in verse 1: don’t hold to the faith with a heart that exhibits partiality—as a Christian, don’t show favoritism. I believe he gives us three reasons why we should strive to honor this instruction.

  • Worthless vs. Pure Religion, James 1:26-27 - In these closing two verses of chapter 1, James gives three more ways for us to be doers of the word; and he also provides a sort of thematic bridge between the topics he's already covered and the remainder of his letter.
    Dr. L. Daryle Worley - Senior PastorJuly 27 2008
  • Be Doers of the Word, James 1:22-25 - The implanted word of truth that brought us forth and is able to save our souls now needs to be obeyed. When we receive it with meekness, that means we’re doing it; we’re obeying it—cooperating with the gospel message that saved us. James gives a direct and clear word of instruction on this important point in three parts.

  • Put Away All Filthiness, James 1:19-21 - We cannot achieve God’s righteous standard by our own efforts, but only as we humbly draw on His grace by faith to live out the gospel message. As James instructed his hearers regarding this exceedingly important truth, he offered them three words of instruction.

  • Do Not Be Deceived, James 1:16-18 - This passage could easily have been folded in with verses 12-15; they finish if that thought. But, for two reasons it is best that we treat them separately: first, seven verses were too many to memorize in one week! Second, more truthfully, verses 16-18 solidify a lesson that is worthy of undivided attention: they teach us how to think rightly about God.

  • Remain Steadfast Under Trial, James 1:12-15 - James uses old covenant categories to urge new covenant faithfulness as he highlighted once again the rich reward of remaining steadfast in faith during times of trial. We can follow this teaching more effectively if we summarize it as three simple commands.

  • Boast in True Riches, James 1:9-11 - Here in James 1:9-11, money (poverty and wealth) is treated as an illustration of the sort of trial in which we could be tempted toward double-mindedness and stand in great need of God's wisdom. In fact, it may well be the epitome of such a trial.
    Dr. L. Daryle Worley - Senior PastorJune 22 2008
  • Ask God for Wisdom, James 1:5-8 - In our efforts to receive trials joyfully in pursuit of steadfast faith and spiritual maturity, we may feel at a loss. How do we do that? In many ways it doesn't even seem to make sense; it's like looking at a reversed picture: everything is familiar but it's all in the wrong place! "I need wisdom!" you say, half in jest, not believing even that would truly suffice. But it Will! James tells us how.

  • Count it All Joy, James 1:1-4 - James, the earthly brother of our Lord, opened his letter to persecuted and dispersed believers (vs. 1) with a quick, direct and stunning charge: "Count it all joy, my brothers when you meet trials of various kinds" (vs. 2).

  • The Lord Upholds My Life, Psalm 54:1-7 - In Psalm 54 David has written something between a praise song and a victory chant – a declaration of dependence on a God who is capable of such miraculous intervention into the desperate circumstances of live that He is worthy not only of our unswerving allegiance and trust, but also our voluntary worship and thanksgiving. But don’t be fooled by the fact that these words were written to be sung. They communicate both rigorous theology and very practical instruction.

  • The King and His Kingdom, Matthew 7:28-29 - As a final word on the greatest sermon ever preached, reflecting on the epilogue provided by the gospel writer himself, let's ask the text two questions that should help us to put Jesus' teaching in good historical context as well as to apply it rightly in our own lives today.

  • The Essence of Wisdom and Foolishness, Matthew 7:24-27 - After addressing false professions of faith in verses 21-23, Jesus turned his attention toward those who are pursuing faulty patterns of obedience in verses 24-27. Two patterns of life are described here, one calledc obedience and the other disobedience, one wisdom and the other foolishness, one justification and the other condemnation.

  • Which Way Are You Going?, Matthew 7:21-23 - Having urged entry by the narrow gate onto the troubled way with the few that are heading toward eternal life, and having warned against false prophets who would try to draw people away from the narrow course, Jesus turns his attention toward those who may think they're on that narrow course, but are not.

  • The Ways of Unrightousness, Matthew 7:15-20 - As Jesus' closing warnings in the Sermon on the Mount continue, He turns His sights on false prophets, exposing their stealth methods, their telling signs, and their eternal destiny. Beware of them; be discerning and don't fall prey to their deception.

  • The Ways of Rightousness, Matthew 7:12-14 - We begin with a question of eternal significance: are you part of the few who are headed in the right direction of life? As Jesus' Sermon on the Mount rises to its climax and heads toward its conclusion, He provides two clear images that capture the quality and nature of the life of His true disciples - those in pursuit of surpassing righteousness.
