What is Biblical Counseling?

Foundational to Biblical counseling is the belief that the Scriptures alone are sufficient to answer problems in life (2 Timothy 3:16-17). God’s Word is true and speaks with authority about the condition of the human heart (Hebrews 4:12).

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

In order to help people find hope, biblical counselors view the problems people face through the lens of scripture. Problems are seen as an outflow of the thoughts, actions, attitudes, and intentions of the heart. It is undeniable that outward circumstances (e.g. abuse, injury, broken past) have influence in a person's life, but it is the thoughts, desires, attitudes and intent of the heart that motivate behavior. From this foundation Biblical counselors seek to minister to hurting people.

Our goal is to impart biblical truth in such a way that it informs your faith.

Finding meaningful answers to problems in life are brought to bear as a result of examining the inner workings of the heart and wisely applying biblical truth to the person’s life. Scripture informs and is directed toward helping the counselee understand themselves as sinners/sufferers who have been forgiven much by Christ’s redemptive work on the cross.

The power of the gospel informs and transforms people's lives. The Holy Spirit is the agent through whom God works to bring about change in a person’s life. Change is a sanctifying growth process. How can there be any other way to help the hurting than to tell them the truth? Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light,” (Matthew 11:28-30) ESV.
